Chakra Mandalas Workshop

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning “wheels”. The 7 chakras of the human body were first described within the yogic tradition of ancient India as wheels of color and light that spin with energy.
These chakras take energy from the outside world and distribute it to the blood, the main glands, the organs and the nervous system.

Do you want insights into your current life situation? During this workshop, you will learn:
1. About the psychological issues associated with each of the seven chakras.
2, You will intuitively choose a chakra mandala that resonates with you, draw it and color it.
3. This experience will lead to a deeper understanding of yourself.

P.O. Box America • Photographs by Curtis Grimstead

We are beyond excited to bring Curtis Grimstead’s photograph exhibit P.O. Box America from Richmond, VA to the MindSpace Collective Gallery.

About the Exhibit:
Grimstead’s photo series captures America’s post offices in their rural, small town charm and in their architectural grandeur of a major U.S. city. While exploring rural Virginia towns during his commute from Charlottesville to Richmond in 2014, Grimstead was drawn to the small road side post offices, each a small piece of history, telling the story of their town and the people who lived there. What started with a social media post of a post office in Greenwood, VA, Grimstead he soon found himself exploring more and more of the East Coast, eventually making his way from Maine to Florida. P.O. Box America tells the story of small town America, and pays homage the USPS, the service that was once and still is, in many ways, the heartbeat of our country.

About the Artist:
Curtis Grimstead currently resides in Richmond, VA. His previous career at the head of Rorschach Records and Petersburg Area Art League found him making weekly trips to the post office. Learning the ins and outs of the mailing system sparked the soft spot for the USPS, which later became his muse. Today, his trips to the post office are more often to capture them in all their photographic glory.

We are beyond excited to share our newest exhibit, TOTEMS, featuring breathtaking masks completely conceptualized and handmade by artist Derek Shaper of Valdosta, GA.

∆• to-tem /ˈtōdəm/: a spirit being, sacred object, or symbol that serves as an emblem of a group of people, such as a family, clan, lineage, or tribe •∆

"I started on this current body of work almost a year ago, after making a wearable mask for Halloween using cardboard, paint and some found materials. I really enjoyed creating that mask so I continued with the theme and ended up arriving at Totems because these pieces all feel like different sort of spirit beings to me - each with it's own personality and mix of characteristics drawn from a variety of different animals and creatures, real and imaginary. Making and building these Totems has been a lot of fun, starting with some geometric shapes formed from wood, cardboard, felt and foam and allowing each one to reveal it's personality layer by layer. Rarely starting with a reference sketch or plan, each Totem comes to life organically through the materials and colors used. I plan to continue making more of these spirit animals, using a variety of different materials and experimenting with larger formats. I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I enjoyed creating them."

An Exploration in Hand Embroidery & Fiber Art: Stitches, Threads, Fabrics, Material and the Alabama Chanin Method

This workshop will be a great opportunity for beginners and advanced students alike. The main focus will be on learning key stitches for any hand-sewer, either following a pattern chosen or created by the students. What makes this class exciting is that it will also provide instruction, opportunities and materials to create and tweak your piece with nontraditional materials—like sewing with bamboo or velvet thread, filament silk, or adding contrasting fabric, from denim or chiffon.

The class will include all materials needed for creating an embroidery piece from start to finish and each student will be able to take home their projects and materials to further work on their piece.
